The Claflin University Department of Music is an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Its degree requirements are in accordance with the latest published regulations of that association. The department is also accredited by the national Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
Develop a strategic plan for the band/instrumental program, conduct or supervise all instrumental ensembles, advise students, teaching instrumental methods classes, supervision of student teachers, and other undergraduate courses in music education. Additional teaching responsibilities may include other courses within thecandidate’s areas of expertise. Participate in professional organizations. In addition, the Director of Bands is expected to participate fully in departmental and community performance obligations consistent with all ensemble conducting appointments. The candidate is expected to participate fully in departmental recruitment, advising/mentoring activities,promoting the Department within the state, nationally and internationally and must be effective in fulfilling committeeservice, grantsmanship, and expected to be significantly active in creative and/or research activities consistent with all faculty appointments.
A graduate degree in instrumental music education/instrumental performance is required; a completeddoctorate is required for tenure-track appointment and rank of Assistant Professor. Additionally, a valid teaching certification in Music Education with a minimum of 3 years of successful teaching within K-12 schools is required. Candidate should have a strong background in the study, performance and teaching of instrumental music and provenability in recruiting for, developing, and maintaining a high quality Wind Ensemble/Instrumental music program. Candidate must have the ability to build and maintain professional relationships and to work collaboratively with public school band programs and the ability to teach, advise and mentor students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
